The evil beast which is soy milk

just kidding... a little. My sweet BL is allergic is cow's milk. While I breastfed it wasn't a huge issue. I just refrained from eating any cow milk products and then later had to cut out all soy products as well (read some wrappers, soy oil is in EVERYTHING). When he decided he was done with the boob we had to look at our options. Soy formula was recommended by the pediatrician and (stupidly) without doing my own research I started him on it. His gastrointestinal whoa wasn't regular enough for me to really link it to the formula. When he was about 15 months or so the pediatrician recommended we make the switch to soy milk. Again he didn't really like it so he didn't really drink a lot and I didn't make the correlation until he drank a bunch one morning and his poor little body got rid of it almost as fast as he drank it. So then I realized (it was about dang time, gosh mom how dense are you?) I needed to look into what I was giving my baby. I don't remember which site I visited but I knew at that point what I was giving him was not good for him. I also found goat milk was a great alternative and not widely known about. It is actually more similar to human milk than cows milk is. BL loves it and his gastrointestinal whoa is long gone (thank goodness, blow outs at 16 months are not fun). From what I've read the information about the downsides of soy products is new and the results from studies aren't conclusive enough for the FDA to put out a blanket statement. The FDA has said that caution should be used. So go do your own research and see what you think. This was a good summary of the things I found and there are some interesting links at the bottom. There is also a book written about the "dark side" of soy referenced on the FDA's website. So I know this is so not interesting if you're a run of the mill person who doesn't even think twice about soy let alone buy it (that would be me if it wasn't for BL) but if you know someone who does pass this on. I just want everyone else to be aware! Good luck in your research and hopefully I'll have something less geeky to talk about soon.
